Homage to the Piers

En 1982 Jon Ericson se lanzó a documentar The Piers [los muelles]. Buscaba retratar un mundo que creían cercano a la existinción (las bodegas abandonadas a un lado del Hudson) y este lugar, que había sufrido un incendio poco tiempo antes, era una ventana perfecta al futuro. Hay que recordar que Homage to the Pier son de un tiempo anterior al SIDA y como tales evocan la nostalgia de un pasado perdido o, incluso más dramático, a punto de desaparecer.

It was 1982 when Jon Ericson set himself to document The Piers, trying to capture the last breath of a place he believed close to extinction, the Hudson River piers—and a long-lasting cruising place. This specific wearhouse was abandoned due to a fire. And it worked as the perfect mirror of a future expanded state. Homage to the Piers is a pre-AIDS set of photographs and, as such, it brings memories of a never-lived past, or even worse, the last moments of a dying future.

A Breeder's Journal

Alejandro es el nombre de su nuevo sencillo y en él nos muestra un mundo oscuro en el que los hombres son gays, latinos, nazis y usan tacones y cuero, sin duda una atmósfera por demás erótica.
No creemos que esté rompiendo esquemas al mezclar religión con sexo, pues como ya hemos mencionado antes, esto se ha vuelto un lugar más que común. Tampoco es algo nuevo que las estrellas pop utilicen la moda más avant garde que se encuentran o que se valgan de utilizar estéticas homoeróticas para llamar la atención de un sector del público homosexual ávido de música bailable. Sin embargo, sí creemos que Lady Gaga representa, dentro del circuito de lo mainstream, una propuesta sólida y sobre todo pensada. Y sí, si nos gustó el video.

You may not like her music, you may even hate her, but truth is Lady Gaga´s work is made in the most professional way. Every single is launched with not only a visually stunning video, but also with a whole expectation-surprise strategy.
Her new video is named Alejandro and it shows a world where men are gay, hot Latinos and wear leather, Nazi-like uniforms and high heels, totally hot!
We don´t think she is breaking any paradigm, religion meets sex and outrageous avant garde fashion are more than common nowadays in pop music. However, we believe that she is a solid and meaningful project in mainstream music. And, yes, we really liked the video.

I don't really love neither the animation nor the contents but I believe it's important to mention because it is the first animated series to have homosexuality as its main theme. Era cuestión de tiempo para que Lady Gaga y él cruzaran sus caminos, y no han cesado sus colaboraciones que hasta hace poco se limitaban a elementos de vestuario y escenografía. Sin embargo, hace exactamente un mes los dos se juntaron para una pieza de performance. Dónde más sucedería esto sino en Japón, donde el arte, la moda, la música y el diseño no funcionan como entes separados, sino como una amalgama con resultados tan interesantes como el que a continuación les presentamos.

Terence Koh is Anal Magazine´s friend and one the artists whose International awarded work gave life to the first issue. His work has a success that many just dream of, and it goes from photography to performance focusing on being not just art but a mixture of many other disciplines.

It seems natural that he crossed paths with Lady Gaga, and that he started working with her with stage scene and clothing. But this collaboration went further just a month ago when they joint forces to make a performance. Where in the world could this happen but Japan, the place where art, fashion, music and design does not live separately and work as only one to make things as interesting as this.

We really hope they keep on working together.
