¿En que reside ser un hombre? ¿En su cuerpo? ¿Qué pasa cuando este cuerpo es transformado, mutilado, aumentado? El trabajo de Joel Peter Witkin genera muchas preguntas, todas en torno al cuerpo, muchas acerca de la masculinidad. En la realización de su obra emplea muy distintos modelos, los mismos no siempre están vivos y muchas veces no cuentan con la totalidad de su cuerpo, o por el contrario cuentan con prótesis.

¿Ser hombre es tener un pene? Buck Angel no posee uno y nadie duda de su virilidad.

De Figuris Veneris: Manual de Erótica Clásica salió a la luz en 1924 de la mano del alemán Friedrick Karl Forberg. El libro es un compendio que describe varias posiciones y actos sexuales de la literatura clásica. Con una afán de ser lo más gráfico posible para enseñarle al mundo moderno lo que sus ancestros podían hacer, se escogió a Paul Avril como el ilustrador encargado de adornar la publicación. Imágenes como estas siempre nos causan una especie de melancolía por lo no vivido, y sabemos que el lector Anal también hallará interés por las mismas.

De Figuris Veneris: Manual of Classical Erotology is a book published in 1924 by Friedrick Karl Forberg. The German philosopher compiled and described a series of sexual acts and positions in classic literature. The idea was to be as explicit as possible and so Paul Avril, famous illustrator at the time, was chosen to create the drawings for the book. This kind of images always put us in a melancholic mood for something we did not live or experience because we were born in this period of time, and we know the Anal reader will find them interesting too.

Excelentes entrevistas y acreedora de una compilación por parte de Taschen. // Famous NYC based zine which was originally from Amsterdam and a pionner in many ways. It features excellent interviews and Taschen compiled the very best into a book. 

Fantastic Man: Excelente diseño, elegante de pies a cabeza. Vale la pena el precio por el tamaño y calidad del contenido. // Beautifuly designed, elegant from feet to toe. The price goes hand to hand to the size and the quality of the content.

Handbook: Los gringos sí que saben fotografiar chicos desnudos. Para los que gustan del porno hip. // If somebody knows how to take pictures of cute naked men in a porno-hip way, those are the Americans.

Kaiserin: Textos por demás interesantes que predominan por sobre imágenes muy cuidadas. La más artsy (admitimos que en veces pretenciosa). // Very interesting texts and nice image selection. The artiest in the bunch (sometimes, we may say, pretentious).

Hace unos meses la Fundación/Colección Jumex comenzó con el proyecto de mostrar películas y en torno a ellas hacer mesas de discusión. Primero le tocó a Truffaut y ahora es el turno de nada menos que Rainer Werner Fassbinder, excelente cineasta alemán cuya obra es obligatoria para cualquier cinéfilo. Las proyecciones serán cada miércoles a las 18:00 horas en el Teatro Hidalgo del IMSS en Av. Hidalgo #23, Col. Guerrero. A continuación les ponemos el programa que no está nada mal, pero ojalá que posteriormente incluyan Querelle de Brest y/o In einem Jahr mit 13 Monden (En un año con trece lunas).

Ludwig II

Ludwig II, el constructor de castillos, el patrón de las artes, el homosexual: el loco. Poco antes del final de siglo, durante el siglo positivista, en el siglo romántico, hubo en rey en Bavaria, el último que la gobernó como estado independiente. Herbert Tobias

Entre más se adentra uno en la fotografía alemana, más autores surgen y vienen a reiterar el porqué del estatus que tiene este país en el arte de la cámara obscura. Herbert Tobias es uno de estos hallazgos.

Herbert comenzó como actor pero gracias a que tuvo que ponerse a trabajar a la muerte de su padre y posteriormente al estallido de la Segunda Guerra Mundial, este sueño se le vio truncado. A principios de los 50 se muda de Alemania a Francia con su novio cineasta Nikos Papatakis y comienza a dedicarse a la fotografía de moda. Se dice que por entonces conoce a Christa Päffge, a quien apoda Nico en honor a su novio (si, la misma que después sería la mítica musa de Warhol, modelo, cantante y miembro de nuestros amados Velvet Underground).

Su trabajo no se limitó a la moda y son sus ensayos eróticos los que aquí les mostramos. La forma en la que fotografía al hombre es sumamente efectiva como estimulo sexual, pero suficientemente compleja y pensada para ni caer en clichés ni convertirse en simplemente masturbatoria. Increíblemente cinematográficas, cada una pareciera un still de alguna película y en varias ocasiones nos recuerda a Genet y su Chant d'Amour -click aquí para ver el film-. 

Si se encuentra en Berlín este sábado, no deje de ir a la inauguración de una exhibición de su obra en la Galería Johanna Breede.

No wonder Germany has this very high status in the Photography World when you find work as great as Herbert Tobias’ pictures.
Herbert’s dream was to be an actor, but his father’s death and World War II were some of the reasons for this dream to keep in stand by for a while. At the beginning of the 50’s he moves to France with filmmaker Nikos Papatakis, his then boyfriend, and starts working in the fashion photography business. It’s said that then he would meet Christa Päffge and nickname her as Nico honoring his boyfriend (yes, the same Nico that was Andy Warhol’s muse, model, singer and member of The Velvet Underground).
His work was not limited to fashion and here we show part of his erotic essays. The way he captures men is extremely effective as sexual stimulation, but it is also complex and well thought. His pictures then, stay far from turning into a cliché. Highly cinematographic, sometimes it feels like they are stills from a movie and it has some kind of reminiscence of Genet’s Un Chant d’Amour -click here to watch the film-.
If you are in Berlin this Saturday, you are very lucky as they are opening an exhibition of his work at Johanna Breede.

Perversion for Profit

Charles Keating fue un millonario estadounidense que además de realizar grandes fraudes que dejaron en bancarrota a cientos de inversionistas, dedicó parte de su fortuna a campañas anti-pornografía. Del resultado de estas campañas surge el documental Perversion for Profit (ca. 1964 - 1965) con tintes cristianos e intenciones de ligar la pornografía con el comunismo y el "diablo". Qué envidia tener todas esas revistas vintage que salen en pantalla!!!

Charles Keating was a US citizen best know for making big fraudes who left tons of investors in bankrupcy. He also put some of his millions into anti-pornography campaings like Perversion for Profit (ca. 1964 - 1965). Perversion for Profit is a documentary which features pornography as "evil" and "pro-comunist". I wish I could have all those vintage magazines they show!!!

Las ilustraciones que Joseph Christian Leyendecker realizó durante principios del siglo XX marcaron tendencia no sólo en la gráfica, sino en la concepción de la masculinidad y del estereotipo del hombre estadounidense de la época. Prolífico como pocos, sus ilustraciones dieron portada al Sunday Evening Post cientos de veces. Su diseño para el anuncio de Cluett, Peabody and Co. conocido como The Arrow Collar Man se convirtió en un icono que inspiró un musical en Broadway (Helen of Troy). Incluso el ex-presidente estadounidense Theodore Roosevelt llegó a mencionarlo, diciendo que el mismo era un increíble retrato del hombre común.
Leyendecker, declarado abiertamente homosexual, vivió a lado de este Arrow Collar Man hasta su muerte. Pues el modelo de dicho anuncio fue Charles Beach, su representante y con quien sostuvo una relación que comenzó cuando Joseph tenía 15 años. Sin duda, su manera de retratar al hombre deviene mucho de su gran devoción hacia el sexo masculino, devoción que compartimos en Anal Magazine y que, usted lector, seguramente disfrutará.

During the beginning of the 20th century, Joseph Christian Leyendecker's illustrations not only set the trend in advertisement, but also in the ideal of the American man. A common colaborator at the Sunday Evening Post, he was responsible for hundreds of its covers. His design for Cluett, Peabody and Co., known as The Arrow Collar Man became an icon that inspired Broadway's musical Helen of Troy. Even Theodore Roosevelt described it as an incredible portrait of the average man.
Openly gay, Leyendecker lived with the Arrow Collar Man until he died because Charles Beach, his manager and partner since Joseph was 15th, was also the model for the advertisement. There's no doubt that these images are so amazing because in many ways they express a devotion for the male sex, a devotion that we share at Anal Magazine and which, for sure, you will enjoy.

"Bob Mizer pasó 48 años haciendo fotografías y películas para su Athletic Model Guild, y 41 años publicando Physique Pictoral, la primera y más explícita revista gay de Norteamérica. Sus diarios personales, que llevó desde que tenía ocho años, dan cuenta de su clara elección sexual desde su adolescencia, sin embargo hasta la edad de 42 años siguió viviendo y trabajando en la casa de huéspedes de su madre, en Los Ángeles, donde su estricto código de ética le impidió expresar con libertad sus fantasías. "Bob Mizer spent 48 years making photos and films for his Athletic Model Guild, and 41 years publishing Physique Pictorial, America's first, and most explicitly gay physique magazine. His diaries, kept from the age of eight, make it clear that he was openly homosexual from his late teens, but until the age of 42 he lived and worked in his mother's L.A. rooming house, where his strict ethical code prevented him from fully expressing his fantasies. For 24 years he worked in black and white and never showed a completely naked man, but following his mother's death in 1964 Mizer built a kingdom dedicated to the pleasures of male flesh, and photographed fully nude men in explicit poses and psychedelically saturated colors. Born in Norway, Sølve Sunsbø is one of the most active photographers nowadays. A common guest in diverse editions of Vogue, Dazed and Confused, V, I-D, Another Magazine and almost every important fashion magazine. Sølve has shot campaigns for Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana and a huge etc. He has also made numerous CD Covers such as Coldplay's A Rush of Blood to the Head. Here, a selection especially made for Anal's readers, but of course a very little of the enormous Sundsbø's universe. 

A Single Man

"A Single Man" es el debut como director de cine de Tom Ford, sexy diseñador de modas que fuera director creativo de la casa Gucci y que ahora preside su propia marca. El trailer promete, y el reparto incluye actores reconocidos, pero habrá que esperar a finales de este año para comprobar si Ford tiene madera para esto.

Tom Ford, sexy fashion designer, former creative director for Gucci and now head of his own brand, will debut as a film director with "A Single Man". A very nice trailer and a cast full of famous faces. The movie will be out at the end of the year, so we'll have to wait to see if Ford will also succeed in this new enterprise.

Zoo es un documental donde lo controvertido del tema es directamente proporcional a la calidad visual y belleza de la fotografía. Un grupo de hombres cuya relación con los caballos es entendida (si es que puede llegarse a entender tan fácilmente) por algunos como un acto enfermo; por ellos, como amor incluso más real que el que sienten por otras personas. 

Tratado de la manera menos morbosa posible, el documental te deja con muchas interrogantes respecto a lo que alguien puede llegar a sentir por los animales. Vale la pena conseguirlo.

Zoo is a documentary as deeply controversial as beautifuly executed (especially the photography). A group of men whose relationship with horses is acknowledged (if someone can really get to acknowledge it) as a sick act by some. However, for them it is a kind of love even more real that the one they feel for humans. 

The documentary is made in the most respectful way, and it leaves you wondering about the kind of feelings some people can experience for an animal. A must see. 

¡Oh Gustave Gustave Gustave!

Ok, sí. Si preguntamos de Gustave Courbet la mayoría pensará en "El Origen del Mundo" o en "Entierro en Ornans". Ahora, si me preguntan a mi de Courbet, lo primero que me viene a la mente es su autorretrato "Hombre Herido". ¡Oh cuanta felicidad al encender mi computadora y ver que mi wallpaper es esa hermosa pintura de ese hermoso hombre "herido"!

The first image somebody imagines when asked about Gustave Courbet may be "The Origin of the World" or "A Burial at Ornans". But if you ask me about him, the first thing in my mind is his selfportrait "The Wounded Man". What a joy to turn on my Mac and see my wallpaper with this gorgeous painting of this gorgeus "wounded" man!
