The weather´s been quite odd these days, with the arrival of summer and the raining season something weird happens with our bodies; the clothes stick to the skin.

As most of you already know, Anal Magazine, instead of complaining, decided to celebrate it with Bend Over!, a themed party with a sexual dress code. Si comenzaste a ser pornográficamente activo entre finales de los ochenta y principios de los noventa, no necesitarás explicación alguna sobre quién es Jeff Stryker, si no, lo único que tienes que saber es que fue la mayor estrella porno del mundo homosexual, por alcance de popularidad, en esa época.

Tras la trágica muerte de los bigotes y los pantalones realmente cortos -que no tenían nada de homosexual en el momento- como la imagen ideal de actor porno durante los setenta e inicios de los ochenta, que se intercambió por la del hombre limpio, bien peinado y sin vello corporal alguno, este hombre se convirtió en el estándar de virilidad.

Ahora podemos decir que, sin duda alguna, esa época ha sido la peor para hablar de imágenes de virilidad e innegablemente la menos creativa y atrevida etapa para la pornografía hasta el momento; basta decir que en los noventa se inventó el monstruoso soft porn.

Stryker nunca participó como pasivo en ninguna de sus películas y fue muy adelante en su carrera que se le pudo ver haciendo sexo oral a otro hombre. A pesar de que no logro entender cómo eso podía ser considerado sexy, tras ver este par de videos, hechos en una época en donde la pornografía no tenía al internet, terminé con una ligera y casi inexplicable sensación de excitación que me hace pensar que tal vez este hombre poseía algo más de lo que yo soy capaz de concederle.

Fue hasta los 23 que Futoshi Miyagi sintió deseos de saber quien era. En su búsqueda por respuestas sintió que la otredad podría servir. Agarró su cámara y se puso a fotografiar gente desconocida que contactaba en internet, bares, antros, en la calle, etc. En las fotos pretendía ser parte de la cotidianidad de estos extraños, en un intento por saber quien era a partir de fingir ser otro que, aunque no existía, tenía una identidad más definida. Si lo logró, no lo sabremos, pero algunas de sus fotos nos llaman la atención pues pareciera que el lazo ficticio en realidad existe.

He also decided that other people would be useful to get some answers, so he took his camera and started to take pictures of strangers he met trough internet, on the street, at bars, etc. In these pictures he acts as if he was part of the strangers everyday life. He did this as an exercise to get to know himself by acting as other person who has a more defined personality (even if this other person does not exist). We don´t know if the managed to find himself trough others, but some of this photographs express true (faked) relationships, something that deserves to be shown.

Homage to the Piers

En 1982 Jon Ericson se lanzó a documentar The Piers [los muelles]. Buscaba retratar un mundo que creían cercano a la existinción (las bodegas abandonadas a un lado del Hudson) y este lugar, que había sufrido un incendio poco tiempo antes, era una ventana perfecta al futuro. Hay que recordar que Homage to the Pier son de un tiempo anterior al SIDA y como tales evocan la nostalgia de un pasado perdido o, incluso más dramático, a punto de desaparecer.

It was 1982 when Jon Ericson set himself to document The Piers, trying to capture the last breath of a place he believed close to extinction, the Hudson River piers—and a long-lasting cruising place. This specific wearhouse was abandoned due to a fire. And it worked as the perfect mirror of a future expanded state. Homage to the Piers is a pre-AIDS set of photographs and, as such, it brings memories of a never-lived past, or even worse, the last moments of a dying future.

Cada video es lanzado tomando en cuenta no sólo los detalles visuales, sino además el fenómeno de expectativa y sorpresa.
Alejandro es el nombre de su nuevo sencillo y en él nos muestra un mundo oscuro en el que los hombres son gays, latinos, nazis y usan tacones y cuero, sin duda una atmósfera por demás erótica.
No creemos que esté rompiendo esquemas al mezclar religión con sexo, pues como ya hemos mencionado antes, esto se ha vuelto un lugar más que común. Tampoco es algo nuevo que las estrellas pop utilicen la moda más avant garde que se encuentran o que se valgan de utilizar estéticas homoeróticas para llamar la atención de un sector del público homosexual ávido de música bailable. Sin embargo, sí creemos que Lady Gaga representa, dentro del circuito de lo mainstream, una propuesta sólida y sobre todo pensada. Y sí, si nos gustó el video.

Her new video is named Alejandro and it shows a world where men are gay, hot Latinos and wear leather, Nazi-like uniforms and high heels, totally hot!
We don´t think she is breaking any paradigm, religion meets sex and outrageous avant garde fashion are more than common nowadays in pop music. However, we believe that she is a solid and meaningful project in mainstream music. And, yes, we really liked the video.

Era cuestión de tiempo para que Lady Gaga y él cruzaran sus caminos, y no han cesado sus colaboraciones que hasta hace poco se limitaban a elementos de vestuario y escenografía. Sin embargo, hace exactamente un mes los dos se juntaron para una pieza de performance. Dónde más sucedería esto sino en Japón, donde el arte, la moda, la música y el diseño no funcionan como entes separados, sino como una amalgama con resultados tan interesantes como el que a continuación les presentamos.

Terence Koh is Anal Magazine´s friend and one the artists whose International awarded work gave life to the first issue. His work has a success that many just dream of, and it goes from photography to performance focusing on being not just art but a mixture of many other disciplines.

It seems natural that he crossed paths with Lady Gaga, and that he started working with her with stage scene and clothing. But this collaboration went further just a month ago when they joint forces to make a performance. La selección que hizo para el blog nos remite totalmente a la concepción visual de lo que cierto sector de México y los mexicanos entendían de si mismos en décadas pasadas (70 - 90), todo desde una lente muy particular que habla desde adentro. El varón homosexual y su comportamiento es un tema recurrente en su obra, y será motivo de mayor escrutinio, pero por hoy nos concentraremos en invitarlos al lanzamiento del libro que recopila la serie antes mencionada. En su serie podemos ver al cuerpo humano como el elemento principal de escenas que nos remiten a bodegones, dándole así un tratamiento más bien objetual. La serie de repente es un poco inconstante en cuanto a lo formal, lo que hace que algunas nos fascinen y otras sólo nos gusten; sin embargo, las que si nos fascinaron y el tipo de modelos que escoge hacen que valga la pena revisar aquí su trabajo. Acuarelas simples de hombres imperfectos en situaciones evidentemente explícitas pero inocentemente perversas, sin intención de ser subversivas. Un ejercicio en el género del retrato que nos encanta en Anal, porque además nos prende.

Además de este trabajo, pudimos encontrar que Aguhar también se dedica a hacer instalaciones culinarias en espacios museográficos donde el olor del alimento toma un papel importante. No sabemos que tanto o cómo podría tener que ver esto con el sexo, pero nos gusta pensar que mucho.

Mark Aguhar es un estudiante y artista de la Universidad de Texas. Esa es la única información biográfica disponible en la red a pesar de que su trabajo aparece en diversos sitios.

This simple watercolor paintings of non-perfect men in situations evidently explicit but mischievously naïve have no attempt of subversiveness. You can call it an excersise in portrait genre. And in Anal Mag we love them, partly because they gets us hard.

Aside from these, Aguhar creates food instalations in museographic spaces. The evocative power of scent has an important roll in his œvre. We don't know how related to sex are his instalations, or in which way, but—since aroma is a big part of it all—we'd love to think that a lot.

Como ya todos sabemos ahora es legal para homosexuales de todos los géneros casarse en el D. F. (en lo personal no creo en esta institución y no planeo casarme, pero ésa es mi disoluta persona). En consecuencia, el PAN en un ejercicio democrático de dimensiones mayores lanzó una encuesta para saber nuestra opinión antes –perdón, después– de lanzarse en una campaña en contra. Tres sencillas preguntas les permitirán saber si dar a todos los ciudadanos los mismos derechos es democrático o no.

¿Está usted de acuerdo o en desacuerdo en que las parejas homosexuales puedan adoptar niñas y niños?
¿Está usted de acuerdo o en desacuerdo con el matrimonio entre homosexuales?
¿Cree usted que un niño adoptado por homosexuales sería víctima de discriminación por parte de sus compañeros de escuela?

La última pregunta asombra por el despliegue de habilidades retóricas y por su transparencia comunicativa. La respuesta es obvia: seguro que en algunos ambientes –principalmente panistas– estos niños serán discriminados, pero ¿acaso no uno de las funciones del Estado es regir la armoniosa convivencia entre sus miembros?, ¿no es una de las funciones de la enseñanza acabar con estereotipos y discriminaciones? Los panistas parecen concebir a la sociedad a su imagen. Nuestro papel es hacer de este Estado –nuestro Estado– una imagen de lo mejor de nosostros.

As we all know it's now possible to marry your gay—or for that matter, lesbian— partner in Mexico City. As a matter of fact, I distrust the institution of marriage and have no plans to ever marry, but that’s only my personal belief. As a supreme exercise in democratic practice, the PAN party decided to conduct a survey before, sorry, after starting a raging campaign against gay marriage. Three simple questions will allow them to know if giving equal rights to everyone is democratic or not.

Do you agree or disagree with gay couples adopting?
Do you agree or disagree with gay marriage?
Do you think a child adopted by homosexuals could be victim of discrimination from his/her schoolmates?

The magnificently rhetorical nature of the last question and the clear communicative message can't do anything else but amaze us. The answer is quiet obvious. Of course it is possible that s/he will be a victim of discrimination—especially if s/he lives in a PANista neighborhood, but isn't the State supposed to guide the relations between members of society for the sake of civility in that society? Isn't it supposed to stop stereotypes and discrimination? The PANistas seem to view society in the image of themselves. Our role is to make the state—our state—in the image of our better selves.

Amén de "Playas", la imperdible expo de Martin Parr que mañana se inaugura, el Centro de la Imagen alberga también "Poses Públicas, Miradas Privadas".
Queda claro que en Anal nos fascinan todas las expresiones artísticas que hablan del varón, y que el retrato fotográfico es una de ellas a la que prestamos gran atención. Por lo anterior, "Poses..." es es una exposición que recomendamos como ejercicio útil a todo aquel que comparte nuestro interés.

De las fotografías que conforman esta expo, dos joyas fueron motivo de que la misma aparezca aquí. Los dejamos con ellas y esperamos que los motiven a visitarla antes su cierre el 28 de febrero.

Tomorrow's opening of Martin Parr's solo show at Mexico City's Centro de la Imagen should be enough to go visit the gallery. But if you need one more reason, there's also another show: "Poses Públicas, Miradas Privadas" (Public Poses, Private Glances).

By now I think we've been clear that here at Anal we love all the art expressions that say something about men, and that photographic portraits have a special place. That's why we recommend "Poses...", because it is a useful exercise for those who share these interests.

Least Wanted: A Century of American Mugshots es un libro que recopila esas fotografías que son tomadas a los criminales al ser capturados (mug shots es su nombre en inglés), enfocando su atención en aquellos cuyos crímenes no les hicieron merecedores de fama alguna. Estas fotografías no sólo son un documento histórico de amplio valor social, sino también un catálogo de retratos de hombres que, por su calidad de detenidos, se muestran en facetas muy extremas que van de la más alta vulnerabilidad al mayor de los cinismos. Una colección de imágenes en las que el hombre se revela de formas que probablemente jamás podrían ser registradas, de no ser por una ley que lo obliga.

Least Wanted: A Century of American Mugshots is a book that compiles those photographs that police take from criminals when captured (mug shots). The book focuses on those

whose crimes did not deserve them any fame.

These photographs are not only a historical document of high social value, but also a catalog of portraits of men shown in the most extreme expressions ranging from the highest vulnerability to the utmost cynicism. A collection of photos that probably couldn't exist without a law that compels to take them.

El Parque es una serie fotográfica tomada por Kohei Yoshiyuki en parques de Tokio durante la década de los 70. Este trabajo sobrepasa lo meramente documental para convertirse en algo más bien artístico por lo directo de cada fotografía, pues parecería que hay una relación mucho más íntima de por medio.

Martin Parr describe a esta serie como "una brillante pieza de documentación social, que captura perfectamente la soledad, tristeza y desesperación que tan frecuentemente acompaña las relaciones sexuales o íntimas en una metrópolis grande y dura como Tokio". Descripción que me parece adecuada más no completa y que denota la gran distancia que tiene Parr con estos temas. En Anal tal vez no seamos expertos pero si somos cercanos y podemos decir que, si bien gran parte de la gente que realiza este tipo de actividades "clandestinas" está motivada por una soledad muy grande, un porcentaje lo hace(mos) por gusto.

Definitivamente un trabajo que vale la pena revisar y cuya importancia deviene en gran parte del momento histórico y lugar geográfico en el que se realizó.

The Park is a photo series taken by Kohei Yoshiyuki in Tokyo parks during the 70's. This work goes beyond the documentary and becomes something closer to the contemporary art strategies because of the raw quality of each picture, which creates a more intimate relationship.

Martin Parr describes the series as “a brilliant piece of social documentation, capturing perfectly the loneliness, sadness, and desperation that so often accompany sexual or human relationships in a big, hard metropolis like Tokyo". I find this description adequate but incomplete and it shows the huge distance that Parr has with this kind of topics. Here at Anal we may be no experts but we are for sure closer than Parr and we can say that: yes, maybe a lot of people involved in this kind of "clandestine" activities are moved for a huge loneliness, but there are some of them/us that do it for pleasure.

It definitely worths going trough every picture and it gets even more interesting if you think about when and where the photos were taken.

Carlo y Armand

Ellos nunca se conocieron, nunca fueron contemporáneos y sin embargo son iconos que comparten muchas cosas y que fácilmente cualquier lector Anal ubicaría. De uno sólo podrán escuchar su legado mientras que el otro es tan accesible que probablemente lo hayan topado alguna vez por la calle.
Sus vidas tan llenas de misterios nos hacen volar la imaginación suponiendo tantas posibilidades que es difícil no mencionarlos. Claro está que no son personajes cualesquiera y más bien dignos de estar en este blog.
Carlo y Armand cautivaron a miles de personas alrededor del mundo. Temporalmente no es posible compararlos puesto que nuestro querido Carlo no vive más con nosotros, murió hace más de doscientos años. Armand, por el contrario, debe estar en este momento bebiéndose unas mimosas con sus amigos jet set en la caótica Nueva York.
Y qué tienen de especial estos dos chicos. Ambos aprovecharon las virtudes de la naturaleza femenina para destacar por encima de los demás. No que otros no lo hayan hecho y, sin ser sexista, no es por lo femenino por lo que hablo de ellos sino al contrario, porque son hombres, y si pudiéramos escuchar a Carlo cantar en estos momentos, seguramente dudaríamos mucho de su género.
Con Armand es un poco diferente. Sí, tal vez con escucharlo dudemos de sus cromosomas, pero con él, lo visual reemplaza la análoga voz de Carlo, incluso pueden preguntarle al afortunado que se casó con él, aquél dueño de una librería que al principio pensaba que Armand era una mujer.
No sé si en la actualidad Carlo hubiera participado en tantas cosas como lo ha hecho Armand, pero lo que sí sé es que sus vidas van con la música y sus voces estuvieron y tal vez sigan en el aire, en algún lugar del planeta.
Gracias a unas cuantas intervenciones quirúrgicas, por cierto, en Carlo mucho más sencillas, ambos alcanzaron el pináculo. No son mujeres pero tampoco son hombres ordinarios, son algo más, una parte de la masculinidad que muchos no se atreven a explorar y que en los siglos pasados se apreciaba como una virtud divina: la femineidad masculina
No sé si ha sido suficiente para que deduzcan quiénes son, pero para no hacerlo más largo he aquí la solución: Carlo Maria Broschi, nacido en Apulia, Italia en Enero 24 de 1705 fue mejor conocido como Farinelli, un castrato con la voz de una soprano la cual mantuvo debido a la extirpación de sus testículos que le causó falta de testosterona y el impedimento de desarrollar caracteres sexuales secundarios. Armand, nacido en Nueva Jersey, EEUU el 5 de diciembre de 1967 es mejor conocido como Amanda Lepore, ha pasado por tres aumentos de senos, dos inclinamientos de ojos, un levantamiento de frente, un descenso de la línea de pelo, una reducción del hueso frontal del cráneo, inyecciones de silicón en la frente, nalgas y labios y una extirpación de las costillas bajas; un Farinelli muy futurista, musa del fotógrafo David LaChapelle. They never met each other as they were never in the same period of time, however they’re both music icons that have a lot in common and that our readers would easily recognize. From the first you could only listen to its legacy, while from the other you could probably expect to find him next to you in some party.
Their lives are so full of mystery that make our imagination blow and makes it hard not to mention them. Of course they are transcendent and worth being in this blog.
Carlo and Armand enchanted thousands of people around the world. It’s not possible to compare them in time matters as Carlos is no longer alive (he passed away more than 200 years ago), while Armand is probably drinking some mimosas with his jet set friends in New York.
But what’s so special about these two kids? They both took advantage of the virtues of women’s nature to stand out from the others. Maybe they were not the first ones, and I’m not being sexist, it’s not because of their femininity that I’m writing about them; on the contrary, it’s because they are men, and if we could listen to Carlo singing in this moment, for sure we would doubt about his genre.
With Armand is a little bit different. Maybe we’ll also doubt about his chromosomes while listening to him, but in this case the visual part replaces the analogue voice of Carlo. You can even ask the lucky guy who married him, that bookshop owner who at first thought Armand was a woman.
I don’t know if in this time period Carlo would have made as many things as Armand, what I do know is that their lives went always side by side with music and their voices were and maybe are still soaring through the air, somewhere. Thanks to some surgeries, by the way, much simpler on Carlo, both reached success. They’re neither women nor men; they’re something else, a part of masculinity that many won’t even experience. Something appreciated as a divine virtue: the masculine femininity.
